M. Finkel & Daughter

Silk embroidery entitled “Juvenile Diversion” by Nancy Battelle, Mrs. Rowson School, Boston, c. 1800

$12,000.00

Details:

Size of the oval: 8" x 10½"
Frame size: 12½" x 15½"

This fine and rare small silk embroidery was made at the one of the best regarded schools for girls in Federal America, Mrs. Rowson's School in Boston, Massachusetts. The maker was Nancy Battelle, born 1783 to Col. Ebenezer Anna (Durant) Battelle.

Entitled, "Juvenile Diversions," this was likely an illustration of a novel or short story that was published in the period. It is a very appealing picture, solidly stitched with the needlework covering the entire surface, with the exception of the finely painted faces, hair and hands of the three boys. The enormous swan is depicted in minute detail, with his leg visible underwater. It retains its original eglomisé with the title appearing in gold leaf block letters, and its fine original gold leaf frame.

Worked in silk and paint on silk, it is in excellent condition with its original eglomisé glass and gold leaf frame.
