How much should you spend? What kind of stone should you get? Is antique better than modern? These are just a few of the many questions that any romancer must consider when ring-hunting. Here to share his ring lore on this special Valentine’s Day episode of our Curious Objects podcast is a true jewelry expert, Matthew Imberman of Kentshire Galleries. First things first: don’t worry about cursed jewelry. In Imberman’s experience, it’s usually not.

Matthew Imberman, along with his sister Carrie, is co-president of Kentshire Galleries, a third-generation family business and one of the foremost dealers of fine antique and period jewelry, operating out of Bergdorf Goodman. He studied art history and classics at the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated with distinction, before working at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. After a brief stint in contemporary art, he went on to pursue a masters degree in art history, with a focus on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century decorative arts. He formally joined Kentshire in 2005, where he has focused on refining the gallery’s founding vision: buying and selling outstanding jewelry and objects of enduring design and elegance. A native of Brooklyn, Matthew is an avid runner, collector, and proud father of two daughters and one cat.
