Signaling the expanding presence of regional and specialty auction houses on the web, Skinner, Inc. recently announced that it would bring its auctions online in spring 2009.
Skinner-Live!, a live online bidding applet, will make it possible for bidders to compete in Skinner auctions in real time from the company’s own website. While other auction houses have partnered with online auction hosts such as eBay.com or LiveAuctioneers.com, Skinner’s move indicates a desire to expand its own brand online.
Skinner also recently relocated from its long-time home in Bolton, Massachusetts, to a new 69,000 square-foot space at 274 Cedar Hill Street in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Skinner’s monthly Discovery auctions, as well as its sales of science/horology and toys and dolls, will be held in Marlborough, while the remainder of the specialty auctions will continue to be held at Skinner’s primary gallery at 63 Park Plaza in Boston. The first Discovery auction to be held at the new Marlborough location is slated for February 25 and 26 and will feature more than eight hundred lots of country Americana.
